In a recent weekly Vid Conference Call, Robert Hanley, CEO of Home Video Studio, sat down with Wendell Timothy, the 2024 Studio Owner of the Year, to discuss his remarkable journey from a 24-year corporate career to becoming a successful Home Video Studio owner in Birmingham, Alabama.

The transition wasn't without its hurdles. Wendell faced personal challenges as he stepped out of his comfort zone to start a new career. However, his determination and the support of the Home Video Studio family helped him overcome these obstacles.

Wendell's dedication and hard work paid off quickly. Within just 18 months of starting his Home Video Studio, he achieved the remarkable feat of becoming the top-ranked video service in his area. This rapid success is a testament to both Wendell's skills and the effectiveness of the Home Video Studio business model.

Balancing Work and Family

  1. Marketing Strategies: He emphasized the importance of effective marketing for new studio owners, highlighting techniques that worked well in his local market.

The Shortcut to Success: Starting Your Home Video Studio

Hello, aspiring video professionals! I'm Robert Hanley, the founder and CEO of Home Video Studio. Today, I wanted to share some vital insights on making money with video, specifically about starting a home-based video editing business.

Robert Hanley, CEO & Founder Home Video Studio

Over the years, I've had countless interactions with budding entrepreneurs eager to jump into the video business. Recently, I received an email from someone believing they could replicate our studio at almost half the price by just buying the equipment. This prompted me to underscore a key point: it's not about the equipment alone; it's about what you do with the equipment.

Let me clarify: the equipment does matter, but it's not everything. The video industry is more than just cameras, editing software, and lighting. If your first and foremost concern is equipment, you're setting your priorities wrong. You see, even the best gear could lead to business failure if you're unable to use it effectively or, more importantly, profitably.

Like an artist picking out paints and brushes, your gear is essential, but it's your expertise and ability to attract and serve clients that will truly define your success. Asking questions like, "How will you find customers? How will you price your services? Who will build your website? How will you market your services?" is where your focus should be at the onset.

...If your first and foremost concern is equipment, you're setting your priorities wrong...

This is where joining Home Video Studio comes in. We help you avoid common pitfalls and jumpstart your success by guiding you through the crucial early decisions. Our approach provides a shortcut to creative and financial success in the video industry, especially for those considering a second act or retirement business. We're not just providing equipment; we're offering a comprehensive solution for starting a life change business.

As a Home Video Studio Owner, you'll not only have access to an excellent equipment package (with our expert advice on what to buy), but you'll also benefit from our proven methods of running a successful video business. We'll teach you how to effectively use your new Home Video Studio equipment and how to navigate the complexities of marketing, advertising, and the art of editing and filmmaking.

If you already have some gear – a camera, computer, or Adobe software subscription, that's great. It could save you money upfront. But remember, don't get fixated on the gear. The real focus should be on how you can use your equipment package to provide you and your family with the income and lifestyle you desire.

Embrace this journey of life change and financial growth. Let's turn your passion for video into a profitable business, providing valuable services to your community. Visit www.myhomevideostudio.com to learn more about how we can make your dream a reality.

May the Force be with You!

Could You Make A Living Editing Video?

Have you ever wondered if you could make a great living simply with video editing? You can!

Don’t know how to edit? Don’t worry! One of the first classes you will take at HVS Basic Training is Video Editing. We use a great system by Adobe called Premiere Pro. Premiere Pro is a professional-level editing platform but it is easy to learn.

Home Video Studio takes you through a two day training program on Premiere during your first week of Basic Training here in Indianapolis. We also offer advanced courses throughout the year and provide on-going technical support.

Typical jobs range from editing somebody’s wedding or vacation to putting together a promotional piece for a small company or organization. Video Editing is my favorite profit center for three reasons:

1   It is extremely creative and challenging! Customers always have a variety of elements for you to draw from. Your job is to put these elements together in a way that makes your client’s message shine.

2  I like the fact that you can edit anytime or anywhere. So you can be in your studio editing early in the morning or late at night or you may be editing down at the local coffee shop. Why not?

3  Editing is a very profitable service for your new studio. We do a lot of value added productions which means that you can set the price of your editing job not on the time it took to do the piece but on the value that it gives to your customer. Video Editing is a value added service.

We’ll teach you to multitask in your studio so you can be editing and your other services will be running in the background. At HVS it is all about putting together a good solid creative product for your client and of course… making money.

I would be happy to chat with you.

Competing in a Video Competition

John and Tammy Montgomery, Home Video Studio, Newark, Ohio
This is the time of year that our Home Video Studio Owners once again begin to gather up all of the videos they have produced during the last year or so and enter into our annual competition: the Hanley Awards; in fact, this will be the 18th Annual Hanley Awards. Hard to believe… time flies.co

So when you first hear about Home Video Studio and you begin to put together what we are about and what we do for HVS owners, customers, and the general public... well it’s a lot to chew on. I always say that new owners only see the tip of the iceberg before they sign on. There is just so much good stuff about Home Video Studio. That’s why I sometimes refer to everything HVS as "The Home Video Studio Universe."

Since 2001, we have produced the Hanley Awards. This is an international competition for Home Video Studio Network Owners – similar to the Oscars. Seriously! Each Hanley Award is 24k Gold and is made by the same company that makes the Oscars. We shell out $226.00 for each award and produce an elaborate ceremony with all the trimmings.

Find a way to compete. Join the club. Enter the fray. Jump in the pool. Get wet. You won’t sink.

I am not sure if you have ever competed in an awards competition. Let me tell you something… when you do… if you do… if you enter and compete in any competition, you will get better at what you do just by virtue of entering and competing. Competition is a wonderful forge. It makes you stronger.

I mean we all have goals… right? Your goal may be to get into the video business. It might be to become a filmmaker or to make a movie. If you want to get better at your craft, find a way to compete.

So eighteen years ago, we began with the first annual Hanley Awards held at the Hard Rock Hotel - Universal Studios, Florida. We did not call them the Hanleys that night. I don’t have that kind of ego. They were referred to as the first Annual Home Video Studio Awards Competition. Seven Owners attended and I even gave awards to my family that night.

Several years later Studio Owner Andy Conte coined the moniker: “Hanley Awards” and it stuck. We made it a Black Tie event and the rest is history.

  1. Best Photo Video Keepsake
  2. Best Sports Video
  3. Best Documentary
  4. Cut and Paste Award for Editing
  5. Best TV/Web Video
  6. Best Video Production
  7. Best Event Video
  8. Best Short Video
  9. Best Long Form Video
  10. Best Memorial Video
  11. Best Company Promo
  12. Best Studio Promo/Trailer/Tag
  13. Best Rookie Video
  14. Best Use of Post Production
  15. “Dr. Strangelove” Award
  16. Best DVA Authoring
  17. Best Backlot Video
  18. President's Award - "Best of Show" (Selected from above)

This summer on the evening of Saturday, July 28, HVS owners will once again convene, this time at the Hilton El Conquistador Golf and Tennis Resort in Tucson, Arizona. We will see who wins but to win you have to enter! (to enter you have to become an owner…). Get the drift?

What's good for the goose...

Several years ago yours truly decided to enter the Sundance Film Festival. It took a huge effort. I spent about 200 hours editing together an eleven-minute film from about nine hundred hours of video. Yep, you heard that right… nine hundred hours of video. I did not win. I was not nominated. But I got better at my craft. I found out what worked and what would not work. Plus, by virtue of entering I found myself with a professional listing on IMBD. That was cool.

My point with this email/blog is this. Find a way to compete. Join the club. Enter the fray. Jump in the pool. Get wet. You won’t sink.

Don't let fear hold you back.

You will be better for the process.

May the Force be with You.

Tony & Lori Melendez Started a Video Production Company with Home Video Studio 14 Years Ago!

After fourteen years with Home Video Studio, Tony and Lori Melendez have advice for people looking into becoming a Home Video Studio owner: "This is a good time, for people, to go into business for themselves. If you have a passion for video,  Home Video Studio is the best way to do it."
Tony and Lori Melendez at 2016 Hanley Awards

Tony and Lori Melendez, Home Video Studio owners from Amherst, Ohio, reached a  milestone in their Home Video Studio career last spring. Tony puts it like this, "Robert (Hanley, founder and president of Home Video Studio) told us that the day we bought a Home Video Studio we'd never forget the date," says Tony, "and he was right! We decided to become studio owners on May 11, 2002 and we have always cherished that day."

That makes Tony and Lori fourteen year veterans with Home Video.
Tony and Lori’s involvement with Home Video Studio came by way of a “happy accident.” Tony was a freelance videographer who picked up the phone looking for some advice.

Tony explains, "I had taken on a wedding job and was looking for some technical support and I happened to pick up a Videomaker magazine and saw an ad for Home Video Studio. I was hoping to reach a video expert and soon I was talking to a stranger named Robert Hanley who not only pointed me in the right direction for my technical problem but advised me on some pricing as well."

Of course Robert also advised him of the benefits of affiliating with Home Video Studio and after that call one thing led to another. Tony and Lori were attracted by the notion of being in business "for yourself, but not by yourself." They attended a "Show N Tell Saturday" in Indianapolis and on a red-letter day in May they became studio owners and have enjoyed the income, support, expertise and camaraderie that successful Home Video Studio owners enjoy ever since.

“You have to have a vision, you have to have a picture of the future you want."
- Tony Melendez

What are some of the keys that make for this success and longevity? If you're looking for secrets or shortcuts there are none (except for Home Video Studio itself). Tony and Lori simply exhibit that age-old traits that work:

“You have to have a vision,” says Melendez, who started his business in his home and operated out of it for nearly eleven years before moving into a studio store, “you have to have a picture of the future you want.”
Tony and Lori at Getaway 4 in 2004

Tony and Lori have worked as a team their entire married life. Tony spent his career as an educator - teaching and coaching – and, until 2011, ran his business alongside these demands, first on his own and then as a Home Video Studio owner. "A mentor told me when I first started teaching not to put all my eggs in one basket," says Tony. Some teachers paint or clean windows on the side. I liked video so I started my own video business and worked it in the evenings, on weekends and in the summer." Lori, who has a background in marketing and also ran a successful daycare, has partnered with him from the beginning.

Together Tony and Lori took the daily steps necessary to fulfill their dream. It wasn’t an accident.  It was planned and cultivated.

Tony and Lori have also won many Hanleys, international awards for creative excellence, at the HVS Annual Getaway held each year. Among these honors are Studio Owners of the Year, Rookies of the Year, Best Video Production, Best Wedding, Best High Concept Video, Best Sports Scholarship Video, Best of Show and Studio Store of the Year.

Learning The Art of Video Editing...

Studio Owners David Cason and Scott Doelling
This week at Basic Training in Indianapolis... our two new students – David and Scott will be taking their first classes in video editing. Both David and Scott are a study in contrasts. Scott has been an award winning news videographer for the past thirty years. He has a keen understanding of the mechanics of both video production and editing.  David has always been interested in editing and production, but has yet to edit his first frame of video. David was in the Air Force for twenty years and then was a Pastor until he retired.  I imagine that most of you reading this are somewhere in between Scott and David as far as experience in video. It not your experience that counts, it is your desire to have the experience that makes the difference.

So how do we teach David and Scott editing? How will we teach you? Let me ask you some questions. Do you like learning? Are you a life-long learner? Do you have great anticipation of producing/directing and editing? If you answered yes then learning the process and techniques of video editing will be a fun and rewarding experience. You’ll find yourself really enjoying it. By the way, David is 62 and Scott is 48.

Home Video Studio has a very tried and true method of teaching video editing. We start first with the basics and the fundamentals of editing on a timeline. At Basic Training we will take you through our two-day course on Adobe Premiere Pro. If you are like Scott – you have some experience - then you will be refreshing yourself on editing, timelines, keyframing, etc and… learning the HVS method of post-production. We have a lot of tricks of the trade that we’ll share with you.  Now if you are like David, everything is going to be brand new.  It is going to be even more exciting. You may be apprehensive at first – a little nervous… but once you get the lay of the land, you will find that editing with Premiere Pro is a breeze.

I remember my first true editing experience. While I had edited some Super-8 projects in college, I hadn’t ever done any professional editing. My first editing job was editing job a fifteen-minute 16mm film which I edited on a Moviola flatbed editor. I read a few books and basically I taught myself film editing.  This was back when you had to literally cut and paste!

Learning to edit today with Adobe Premiere Pro is in one way very similar to my old Moviola flatbed days. First we teach you the mechanics of editing: how to import your video and audio; how to find a clip and place it on the timeline; how to make an insert edit, etc. You’ll make your first few practice projects and you’ll begin to understand the editing process. Eventually you’ll learn keyframing, color correction and other advanced techniques.

Once you have basically learned to fly… you can begin and finish a project and you understand the process; then you will start doing work for paying clients. What you will find when you are editing real projects for real people is that you will learn so much more quickly. Your understanding of editing and your editing capabilities will increase dramatically. You’ll be come a real editor!

The next part of our training on video editing comes into play after you have been running your studio for a while – usually three to six months.  You’ll attend a major training and take core classes on editing and post production.

Every March, Home Video Studio puts on a six-day training called Advanced Training.  When you attend Advanced Training you will move to the next levels of editing – hopefully mastering the all of the techniques we teach. You will also begin to integrate other Adobe programs – Photoshop, Audition and After Effects as well as plug-ins by other companies into your editing tool box. You’ll leave AT with a lot of new knowledge and go home to your studio where you will begin to use all of the new techniques that you have learned. Once again you’ll be editing real projects with real paying clients. Now your videos for these clients take on a new level of sophistication. Your projects become more professional. They present themselves on a new level. You the editor; are becoming an artist.

Artistry - learning the art of video editing is an interesting concept. This is what we teach at the Getaway in July. The Getaway is our five-day annual convention and training. Can we teach art? Yes. Can we teach you to be artistic? That depends on you. We can and do immerse you in both video editing and video production classes -  with a twist – you are now making your own projects with complete control – from concept to creation.  You’re working in the HVS backlot. You’re shooting and editing with no recipe. Professionals from around the world are teaching, guiding and helping you learn the “art” of editing. It is really fun and it really works. It’s total immersion. I have seen so many of our studios that started with zero editing experience become masters of the art after going through the HVS system.

So when I landed my first film project, I was both scared and excited! I had never even touched a 16mm camera! Secretly, I wondered if I would even like editing. And if I did like it, would I be good at it? Many of you reading this are thinking the same thing. Can I do it? Will it work? Will I enjoy the business and will I become great at it? Will I get a return on my investment? I had these same questions. What I found out was that once I was into the process of editing my first film, I began to feel comfortable. I liked it! I really enjoyed editing. Before I knew it, I was editing TV commercials, corporate films, my own feature film and a lot of other projects. I became a great editor.
Denise & Robert Hanley
Then I became a great teacher.

I’d like to be your teacher – your mentor. We have a great teaching team at HVS. It’s not just me. There are many professionals who will teach you all facets of editing, production and running a studio. There’s a lot to Home Video Studio. That’s why we charge big bucks. Taking on a new studio is a huge responsibility. You’ll be a bit scared… up and until you sign your agreement. That's natural. After you come aboard everything changes because you have committed yourself to learning.  You are involved!  You are a studio owner and your are becoming a Producer/Director/Editor. You have a new career! You have a new chapter.
Will you like editing? Will you enjoy the business? There is only one way to find out for sure.  You’ve got to make that first call to me and eventually you have to give yourself a chance to succeed. Life is for the living. We have a great group of studio owners who will help you succeed. Some of them will become your best friends.

Call me anytime. We can chat about you and your dreams and making those dreams a reality. Let’s discuss film, movies and this wonderful business.

Oh… I will keep you updated on Scott and David and their progress. Our next Basic Training starts in late October and we have another one in November. Join us.

May be Force be with You.

Debbie Williams, Former Graphics Arts Designer wins Home Video Studio Owner of the Year!

Congratulations to Producer/Director/Editor Debbie Williams, Home Video Studio's "Studio Owner of the Year." Debbie is a former graphics arts designer and is from Florence, KY.
After working for 18-years as a Graphic Designer in local papers, including The Cincinnati Enquirer, and another 11-years as a Freelance Designer, Debbie decided to change her career path a bit to focus on her strengths in photography, videography and music. As a graduate of Northern Kentucky University, she holds a Degree in Fine Arts and Photography as well as Music Performance.
Drawing and Photography was something that attracted Debbie very early on in her life. She knew that she wanted to do something utilizing her artistic skills. In her early years at the newspapers, all creative was done by drawing board and t-square. Through the years, as technology progressed as it has, she gravitated towards computer design, creative photography and editing to assist her in her creations. Debbie loves working with creative software to bring her visions to life.
All of this led to Debbie's desire to own her own studio business. She had been looking for opportunities and liked what she saw in Home Video Studio so in 2011 the doors to her Home Video Studio opened!
Debbie's Home Video Studio has been awarded Studio Owner of the Month in May, 2012, after only 6 months in business. She also has total of 21 Hanley Award Nominations and 9 Hanley Awards. In July 2014 her studio was awarded with the highest award of a Seven Stars Studio for Excellence which is awarded to a select number of studios each year. In July 2013, she was awarded with The Rising Star Award. On July 30, 2016, Debbie was recognized as Home Video Studio "Studio Owner of the Year" at the 16th Annual Hanley Awards in Orlando Florida. This is certainly a milestone achievement and awarded to only one studio each year.
Debbie Williams is a mother of 2 boys, an accomplished flautist, an artist, and a certified personal trainer. She also is a Master in Taekwondo as a Sixth Degree Black Belt, also holding a First Dan Black Belt in Hapkido. For fun, she spent 8 years on the tournament circuit throughout the USA, finishing in the Top 10 and/or Top 4 each year. To further feed her creativity (and relax), she also loves to knit, crochet, draw and paint.
If you're in the need for any video production, transfer or creative services please give Debbie a call at (859) 525-0305. She'll be happy to hear from you! If you want more information on how to start your own Home Video Studio go to www.myhomevideostudio.com and call 1-800-464-8220.

How do you make money with video? I get asked that question. A lot!

We’ll be teaching the answer to that question in less than three weeks in Orlando, Florida. You should join us.

We’ll be doing four days of outstanding training. It’s our annual Home Video Studio Convention. We call it The Getaway!

We’ll do four days on video production.

We’ll do four days on marketing and sales.

Two sides of the same coin – getting business and doing business.

Frank Rohmer, our Hollywood connection will be flying in to do our video production training.  He’ll kick our week off with a full day on 360° video production. Then he'll do two days on pure video production. Frank will finish up with a full day of still photography.

On the getting business side, Joe and Dawn Pici of Orlando, Florida will be back once again this year teaching and presenting strategies for building your video business getting customers and finding new clients.  They'll do a four day course.

Yes...I know what you're thinking... you can mix and match tech and marketing if you want to.

One of my favorites sayings is “I rather know how to get the business than to do the business.” The reality is...  getting business is where most businesses fail – especially video production businesses.

Knowing how much to price, when and where to advertise and how to spend your advertising dollars is one of the secrets I teach. I can show you how to make a ton of money – a very good living.

We always start with getting business. That ‘s the most important part. If your not making money, lot’s of it – you've got nothing.

Two ways to join us in Orlando:

First, it’s not too late to join us as an official Home Video Studio Owner.  You can train with our other studio owners.  We always get at least one new person at this time of year. Remember I am an expert in financing. If you need help getting the money to come aboard, you should call me today. I can help.

Secondly… I’ll be doing our Show ‘N Tell Seminar in Orlando on Sunday, July 31. If you want to join us in Orlando for Show ‘N Tell weekend give me a call. I'll spend the day with several potential new studio owners taking them through everything about running a successful studio business. This seminar is free and in fact we pay your transportation to Orlando if you end up coming on as an HVSN owner. You should ask me about that.

Think about what you have been doing up to now. Has it worked? Are you happy? Are you ready to move forward?

Spend a weekend or even a week with us and change your life and your lifestyle.

What would happen if you did? What would your life be like one year from now?

May the Force be with You!
