Kyle Cooley in his studio.
Home Video Studio owners typically come on board armed with knowledge and experience in some of the areas required for a successful video business but not all. For instance, a highly technical person may want help with ways to market their skills, or a highly creative or gregarious person may not know much about computers and software. The beauty of HVSN is that we help new owners round out there experience with training in the areas they need to work on. That's the case with with our January Owner of the Month Kyle Cooley of Cooley Video Services, who came to us from a technical background looking to fill in the gaps to turn his love of video technology into a video business. After a few short months and still part-time, Kyle is meeting the "well-rounded" challenge, applying what he's learned, and seeing results already. "I knew I needed help filling the gaps that I had in my skills and capabilities," says Cooley, "and I didn't want to spend my time reinventing the wheel when Robert had done all the work and shown its value."

Kyle has always been intrigued by technology and gadgets. Even before computers became part of our daily lives he was a kid dabbling in all things electronic, and when personal computers came out he took the plunge, purchasing what was sure to seal the sum of all PC's - a Macintosh SE/30 complete with a black and white 9" screen. Thus began the journey that still finds him in front of a Mac, though a bit more powerful, editing video for his clients.
Growing up in Amherst, Ohio Kyle attended college at Eastern Michigan University as an Industrial Technology Education major. "That means ‘a shop teacher'," laughs Cooley. Kyle has faithfully taught for many years in the Monroe, Michigan school district passing on his love of technical and mechanical applications to appreciative students. He currently teaches Graphic Design, Drafting, Electronics and Metal shop.

So how does the Home Video Studio story begin? "Somewhere, someplace a long, long time ago on the internet," Cooley remembers. If it's a little hazy it's because Kyle is a man of deliberation, taking about ten years to see if and how he could turn a passion into a profession. Cooley's is also a story about how a kernel of desire may lie dormant for a season or two, but the right circumstances will wake it up again.

"It definitely took a long time to happen," remarks Cooley. "I recently found an email from Robert inviting me to a Show and Tell from 2005. It's always been in the back of my mind for years but the planets definitely aligned this last year when my circumstances allowed me to take the leap."
Recently Kyle had been driving the 100 mile trip from Michigan back to Ohio regularly up to and after his father's passing as he was the executor of his estate. The day he signed the final papers with the lawyer and was heading out of town, for possibly the last time, he passed Tony and Lori Melendez's Home Video Studio in Downtown Amherst, his old home town. "I had always meant to stop in. I got all the way to the outskirts of town and said to myself that if I didn't check out their business then I would regret it forever. So I turned around and went back to their store. Tony sat down and talked with me for almost an hour and lit the fire that got me started on the path to becoming a Studio Owner."

"if I didn't check out their business then I would regret it forever."

After that chat it didn't take nearly as long to get moving, and Kyle was installed weeks afterward. He hit the ground running and has been busy since that day in July of last year.

We caught up with Kyle a few weeks ago while he was enjoying Christmas vacation and working on a customer's video project. He was gracious in offering some insights on his new business:

Do any significant days and/or projects stick out so far?
The first time a customer came in a large bin with a whole life's worth of film and a variety of video tapes, and didn't blink as they wrote a large check and went on their way. It was all I could do not to have my jaw drop before they left.

Who are some of your influences?
My parents were fantastic people who worked hard, had all the important things in life, and gave us kids everything we needed to succeed. And of course Steve Jobs deserves a shout out. If not for him all our computers and cell phones wouldn't be as near a satisfying experience as they are.

What, so far, do you deem vital to success at this business?
What's worked for me is to immerse myself in all things HVS. Listen to the conference calls. Read and reread all the guides. Read all the interviews with other owners. Look at everyone's websites and studio Facebook pages. Talk to the other owners and get their opinions on different things. While I was waiting for my install I listened to every conference call back to 2012. That really made me feel like I knew most everyone in the HVS family it really fired me up and gave me the confidence to pursue the dream.

What are some goals?
Grow the business and put my 3 girls through college. And there's this store front I have my eye on ;-)

What part of the business comes easy for you? What part of the business is difficult?
I love the technical stuff even when it's hard. I'm always trying to make the workflow run quicker/easier while still keeping a quality final product. I love it when 3 or 4 projects are whirring along at the same time. On the difficult side, I'm not a natural people person which makes a few things a little more challenging, but I'm working at it and getting better every day.

Any sayings, quotes, or aphorisms that you adhere to that apply to your business?
To the steady goes the prize. Or as my Dad used to say: Inch by inch it's a cinch. Corny but true.

What are some prominent lessons you've learned so far?
Stick with the plan and don't overthink things. You don't have to do everything at once but you have to keep plugging away at it.

Congratulations to Kyle Cooley of Cooley Video Services in Monroe, Michigan our Studio Owner of the Month!

Harvesting the Dream of Own Your Own Video Production Studio - Chris and Michelle Moen

Chris and Michelle Moen at Getaway 13 in Las Vegas
Chris and Michelle Moen had a dream. Call it The American Dream. Like all dreams it started in their imaginations. Now it's real. It began as a passion. Now it has blossomed into a profession.

Before Home Video Studio Chris had been a video hobbyist: "I enjoyed doing personal projects and archiving photos and documents for friends and relatives," says Chris, "but I always wanted to make a business out of it." Michelle amplifies this claim: "We knew it was going to happen when the time was right. It was so real we even had a domain name that we kept renewing for our "imaginary" business."
Then nearly two years ago the right time came. Chris and Michelle became Home Video Studio owners. Last month Chris and Michelle Moen had their best month ever. Meet the Moens from Bloomington, Minnesota. They are Home Video Studio's Owners of the Month.

Growing up in the Twin Cities area Chris and Michelle came to appreciate the "lights, camera and action" of video by way of show biz. Chris fancied himself as an actor but quickly found a home on the other side of the camera: "I became technically proficient by way of my horrible acting!" laughs Chris. "I tried out for my high school theater but the director suggested I try my hand as a tech." Michelle, on the other hand, had a penchant for song and dance. As a matter of fact she auditioned and won a position with the internationally renowned "Young Americans" and was soon in California dancing at Disneyland.

Still single Chris extended his technical education by enrolling and graduating from Full Sail University in Florida. Soon he was Production Coordinator for Theatrical Presentations International where he was involved in NFL halftime shows, Major League All-Star Games and The Olympic Games. During this time Michelle decided to come back to the Midwest and began working for a marketing company.
Chris and Michelle finally met by way of a mutual friend and were married. Soon after Chris took on a hefty yet fulfilling role as Presentation Technology Director for a huge Twin Cities area church with 10,000 members and five weekend services. There he headed up all aspects of video presentation including video shooting, editing, audio and graphics. His love of people (and patience) was also honed there as he taught many church volunteers to become proficient with the hardware and software provided.

One day, still harboring the dream of owning his own studio, Chris happened to see another Home Video Studio in the Minneapolis Metro Area. It was exactly what he wanted. A few phone calls, a few logistics, and soon Chris and Michelle were equipped and ready to do business as Home Video Studio, Bloomington MN. They began as a part-time studio but went full time nearly a year ago.
"Like most studio owners will tell you," says Chris, "the best part of being an owner in an established franchise system like this is that you don't have to reinvent the wheel. I wanted to be in business for myself but, hey, if there's a proven marketing plan, proven equipment and all the experience I'm going to take advantage of that."
Like many husband and wife teams at Home Video Studio Chris is quick to tell you that he couldn't do it without his wife. Michelle handles a lot of the public aspects of their business, including a lion's share of marketing and networking, as well as administration. "I absolutely couldn't do it without her," says Chris. "We are a team. I push a lot of the buttons on these machines and she does the smart stuff!"
Chris Moen at the 13th Annual Hanley Awards

Michelle is quick to reciprocate the praise: "What carries us in our business is Chris' enthusiasm. It's like a mission. We do what we do because it's a necessary service that really helps people and enriches their lives." And they make money doing it.
Chris also enriches the lives of fellow studio owners as the Director of Technical Support for Home Video Studio. With his enthusiasm, sense of mission and experience who better to ensure the Home Video Studio's customers worldwide are getting their video needs met?

Congratulations to Chris and Michelle Moen. Home Video Studio's Studio Owners of the Month.

We recently caught up with Chris and Michelle a few days ago and asked them some questions…

Now that you have a few years under your belt what still surprises you about this business?
It's amazing how much old content is still out there waiting to be transferred to a modern medium. We get more and more people our age whose parents are "downsizing" and they come across "the box" that has all their precious memories. They wonder what to do with it and that's where we fit in!

What have you found is absolutely necessary to thrive as an HVS owner?"
Advertising and marketing. If you are not marketing and advertising your business you're not in business. It's a hobby.

Any special days or events stick out in the last few years?
Parades!! Join a parade! Best $50 spent ALL YEAR LONG! We still get people telling us they saw us in the parade, or "I saw you on TV!!" Our local Access TV station broadcasts the parade!!! In fact, we have one coming up in September!

What are some of your mistakes and what did you learn?
Talking too much! I have got to learn to shut up and let the clients tell me what they want and not suggest so many "options". People hate options! They want a service done. Do the service, THEN offer options like copies, or different formats. I think that is why Michelle is so good at it! I need to work on "Listen, not blab!"
Chris & Michelle Moen in Studo!

What is your favorite business-related thing to do?
Multitasking. I love it when there are 5 different machines all humming away at a task! I just bounce back and forth between ‘em!

Any favorite quotes or aphorisms that sum up your way of being?
Be the most positive person you know.

Join us! Saturday, February 7, 2015 and learn how you can run your own profitable video production business from your home.

We’ve got another exciting and life-changing Home Video Studio Show ‘N Tell Saturday coming up this week! Join us on Saturday, February 7, 2015 and learn how you can run your own profitable video production business from your home.

My studio made over $19,000.00 in January - and I was personally in the studio only three weeks of the month! Join us at Show ‘N Tell Saturday and I will tell and show you how I did it and how you can do the same thing! I’ll show you how your new studio will make tons of money and much more.

Here’s what we’ll cover this Saturday:

  • ·      The 27 Profit Centers including our newest service – transfer to the DVA and the Digital Video Archive Cloud.
  • ·      An overview of the HVS training.  We have a huge training event coming up in early March. You can attend.
  • ·      The three equipment packages – What gear do you need in your new studio?
  • ·      The five essential secrets of the HVS system – What they are and how they can work for you.
  • ·      Financing (if you need it)
  • ·      Financial goals and expectations.
  • ·      What’s it like to run your studio on a daily basis?

It costs nothing to attend Show ‘N Tell Saturday. In fact, we will pay all of your travel costs (i.e. your airfare, mileage, hotel, car rental, meals, etc. should you decide to join Home Video Studio this Saturday).  We don’t care what the plane ticket costs and you shouldn’t either.

It’s Monday as I write this, and I want to ask you a couple of questions: What did you think about as you got out of bed and got ready for work this Monday morning? What were you thinking about on your drive to work? If you’re like most people you were thinking about your family, your kids, that vacation you want to take and, in general, all the things you would do if you weren’t working.

Are you tired of building someone else’s dream? Spend the weekend of February 6th and 7th with me and I guarantee it will change your life. You’ll never have to make that drive to work again. I can show you how to have a great lifestyle and a great business.

Here’s another fact: In less than seven days you could own your own video studio. I guarantee that you will jump out of bed every day after that! You will love working in your own studio and enjoying the Home Video Studio Lifestyle.

Dan Weiniger and his daughter in studio.

What is the HVS Lifestyle?

  • ·      Family flexible - Full time hours are 9:30 am to 11:30 am and 1:30 pm to 5:30 pm. Monday trough Friday.
  • ·      Work when you want to work. Play when you want to play.
  • ·      Never miss your child’s soccer game or cheerleading event.
  • ·      Take the kind of vacations you want, when you want to take them.
  • ·      Build your dream and a legacy for your family!

My motto is: “work hard, play hard.” Yep, you’ll do well in this business but first you have to get here! Jump on a plane or jump in your car and come to Indianapolis, Indiana for Show ‘N Tell on Saturday, February 7th.

The first step is to call me to discuss your interest. I know you will have questions. You’ve got that one question that is burning a hole in your pocket right now so call me.

Call me today and we can chat: 317-358-5932 or 866-714-1956.

May the force be with you...

P.S. Oh… by the way, did I tell you that we have many traditions at HVS? Eating is one of them and you are invited to our Pre-SNT dinner on Friday night at 8:00 pm. It’s our treat! Let ‘s get to know each other. Join us for dinner as well on Friday, February 6th at 8:00 pm.

Rupert of Survivor: Heroes vs. Villains, talks to Home Video Studio Franchise owners about making a life change

How are you facing current changes and challenges in your life?

Denise and I were watching Survivor: Heroes vs. Villains this evening. I was pleasantly reminded of Home Video Studio’s Advanced Training from four years ago. Rubert Boneham, better known as just Rupert, (one of the Heroes) was our keynote speaker for Advanced Video Training #8 in February of 2007. He inspired myself and other HVS owners that day.

To me, Rupert represents the American Dream. He spoke about his core values and focused on the topics of never giving up and giving back to the community. He described both the challenges he had faced and the changes he had made in his life and how they were not always easy. Of course he talked about his strategies for playing the “game” – Survivor and his viewpoint on the game of life.

We also learned about Rupert’s Kids, his organization in Indianapolis that helps troubled youth. The giver’s gain is a core philosophy for Rupert and Home Video Studio. We wish him all the best in Survivor this season!

Home Video Studio is a second, third and fourth career for many people. If you want to make a change in your job and start your own business, HVS may be the solution. Join the Home Video Studio Family today. Let’s Chat: Call my cell 317-358-5932.
