From Corporate Career to Video Entrepreneurship: Meet HVS Studio Owner o...

From Corporate Career to Video Entrepreneurship: Wendell Timothy's Inspiring Journey

In a recent weekly Vid Conference Call, Robert Hanley, CEO of Home Video Studio, sat down with Wendell Timothy, the 2024 Studio Owner of the Year, to discuss his remarkable journey from a 24-year corporate career to becoming a successful Home Video Studio owner in Birmingham, Alabama.

A New Chapter in Life

Wendell's story is one of courage, determination, and the pursuit of a passion-driven career. After spending over two decades in the corporate world, Wendell decided to take a leap of faith and embark on a new adventure in video entrepreneurship.

Overcoming Challenges

The transition wasn't without its hurdles. Wendell faced personal challenges as he stepped out of his comfort zone to start a new career. However, his determination and the support of the Home Video Studio family helped him overcome these obstacles.

Leveraging Past Experiences

One of the keys to Wendell's success was his ability to leverage his previous experience in church production. This background provided him with a solid foundation in video production, which he skillfully applied to his new business venture.

Rising to the Top

Wendell's dedication and hard work paid off quickly. Within just 18 months of starting his Home Video Studio, he achieved the remarkable feat of becoming the top-ranked video service in his area. This rapid success is a testament to both Wendell's skills and the effectiveness of the Home Video Studio business model.

Balancing Work and Family

One of the most appealing aspects of owning a Home Video Studio for Wendell has been the ability to balance his professional and personal life. Running a home-based studio has allowed him to build a thriving business while still prioritizing time with his family.

Invaluable Insights for Aspiring Entrepreneurs

During the interview, Wendell shared several key insights for those considering a similar career change:

  1. Marketing Strategies: He emphasized the importance of effective marketing for new studio owners, highlighting techniques that worked well in his local market.
  2. Skill Transition: Wendell discussed how he successfully transferred skills from his corporate career to his new video business, demonstrating that past experiences can be valuable in unexpected ways.
  3. Building a Home-Based Business: He offered practical advice on setting up and managing a successful home-based video studio, including tips on time management and creating a professional work environment at home.
  4. The Home Video Studio Community: Wendell spoke warmly about the support and camaraderie he's found within the Home Video Studio family, underscoring the value of joining a supportive franchise network.

Recognition of Excellence

Wendell's hard work and success were formally recognized at the 24th annual Hanley Awards, where he was named Studio Owner of the Year. This prestigious award is a clear indication of Wendell's exceptional performance and dedication to his craft.

Wendell Timothy's journey serves as an inspiration to anyone considering a career change, regardless of age. Roger Conrad Wins Dr. Strangelove Award at 24th Annual Hanley Awards

Celebrating Excellence: Roger Conrad's Heartwarming Win at the 24th Annual Hanley Awards

In the world of video production, moments of recognition are always special. But when they're shared with family, they become truly unforgettable. That's exactly what happened at our recent 24th Annual Hanley Awards, where Home Video Studio owner Roger Conrad from Hamilton, Ohio, took home the prestigious "Hanley" in the Dr. Strangelove category.

A Night of Surprises and Emotion

The awards ceremony was already a night to remember, but Roger's win brought an extra layer of emotion to the proceedings. As he took to the stage to accept his award, Roger was joined by a surprise guest – his son Dylan, who had driven an hour after work just to be there for his father's big moment.

This father-son duo isn't just about moral support, though. Dylan was actually the co-star of the award-winning video that earned Roger his Hanley. Despite living in different states (Roger in Ohio and Dylan in Florida), they've proven that distance is no barrier to creative collaboration.

More Than Just an Award

Roger's acceptance speech was a perfect blend of humor, gratitude, and inspiration. He shared anecdotes from the video-making process, cracked jokes that had the audience in stitches, and even hinted at future plans. In a moment that got everyone excited, Roger revealed his "secret plan" to make Dylan the youngest Home Video Studio owner ever!

But perhaps the most touching part of Roger's speech was his message of encouragement to others. He spoke about finding confidence at the end of dark tunnels and the power of imagination in overcoming life's challenges. It was a reminder to all of us that success in this industry isn't just about technical skills – it's about perseverance, creativity, and the courage to dream big.

The Home Video Studio Difference

Roger's win and his heartwarming story encapsulate what makes Home Video Studio so special. We're not just a network of video production businesses – we're a family. We celebrate each other's successes, support each other through challenges, and inspire each other to reach new heights.

This father-son collaboration is a perfect example of how Home Video Studio can be more than just a job. It's a platform for creating lasting memories, strengthening family bonds, and building a legacy that can be passed down through generations.

Your Turn to Shine

Are you inspired by Roger and Dylan's story? Do you have a passion for video production and a dream of owning your own business? Home Video Studio might be the perfect opportunity for you.

We provide all the training, support, and resources you need to turn your video production skills into a thriving business. Whether you're a seasoned professional or just starting out, we have a place for you in our family.

To learn more about owning your own Home Video Studio:

Who knows? The next Hanley Award winner could be you!

Congratulations once again to Roger Conrad on his well-deserved win. Here's to many more years of creativity, success, and heartwarming moments in the Home Video Studio family!

A New Path Unfolds: Barry Shawgo's Journey from Corporate Veteran to Home Video Studio Owner

From the grind of the corporate world... to the creative freedom of running his own business, the transformation of Barry Shawgo is a story of change, determination, and success. In our latest blog post, we want to share Barry's journey with you. His experience, we hope, will serve as an inspiration for all who are seeking to reinvent their career paths, or embark on a fulfilling second act in life.

Barry's professional life was deeply rooted in the corporate sector. For 19 years, he honed his skills in the newspaper business, advertising, and marketing, spending his time in retail sales and working for a software company that catered to media companies. His vast experience in these areas is as diverse as it is impressive.

But the relentless pace of the corporate world, with its rigid 70 hour weeks. schedules and unending pressures, eventually led Barry to yearn for a change. He wanted a stress-free, flexible business opportunity - one that would allow him to take charge and be his own boss. That search led him to Home Video Studio.

Barry's transition from the corporate world to the helm of his own Home Video Studio is marked by a distinct sense of freedom and tranquility. He reflects on the pure creative freedom he now enjoys in a less stressful environment - no bosses, no meaningless meetings, and most importantly, no limitations.

Barry Shawgo - Home Video Studio Owner
One of the crucial factors that influenced Barry's decision was the versatility of the Home Video Studio model. Whether he wanted to run it as a lifestyle business or expand it into a larger enterprise, the business model gave him the flexibility to choose his own path.

However, the true differentiator for Home Video Studio, as Barry points out, is its supportive framework. With expert guidance and advice from the Home Video Studio Family - a network of successful owners - it provides a solid foundation for newcomers. Despite this, the model allows room for individuality, letting owners adapt the business to their own specific markets.

"Home Video Studio gives you the fra
mework to be successful and the guidelines and those types of things. But at the end of the day, I own the business, I make the decisions."

Barry underscores the importance of following the expert advice provided. Despite the autonomy offered, he emphasizes that the guidance is often invaluable in different markets.

Barry's story is a testament to the possibilities that open up when you're passionate about your work. If you're contemplating a career change, have an interest in video and technology, or are looking for a fulfilling 'second-act' business, Barry's experience underscores that Home Video Studio could be the opportunity you've been waiting for.

Barry's words of wisdom? If you love working with people, enjoy making them happy, and have a passion for video, then Home Video Studio is an opportunity that deserves your serious consideration.

How Many Monitors? Let's Do the Numbers...

Someone commented on our Facebook ad yesterday. It was an attempt at humor. Something like “Look honey, I have seven monitors. Now I can really edit.” I messaged back and said: “Actually there are thirteen monitors.”

When we started 22 years ago. There were only magazines to advertise in. Twenty years ago we started advertising in Videomaker Magazine and we are still advertising there today. The fact is… I am sure people saw our ad way back when in Videomaker and chuckled from time to time. Even today people like to comment on Facebook and say that they tried a video business and it didn’t work out for them. Reminds me of that line from Glengary Glen Ross. Alec Baldwin says: “Bunch of losers sitting around in a bar, "oh yeah, I used to be a salesman.”

What they don’t know is that every successful business has its secrets and its secret sauce. If you want, you can come to Indianapolis and count the monitors. I re-counted. There are actually 18 in my studio. There’s a reason we have so many monitors. There’s a reason we are so successful. There are tons of reasons why we make so much money.

We can talk numbers. Let’s do it. Last year my studio made over $300,000.00 and I run my studio part time. Last week I made over $12,000.00. Yesterday I made over $5000.00. You can say that that is easy for me to say but what about “me” (you). Well, you’ll never know until you try. If you sit in your comfort zone reading my emails, scrolling through Facebook, watching mindless TV, you’ll never know.

Starting a business takes courage. Getting started in a new business is a blurry business for most folks. Where to start? What to do? Many are afraid of making mistakes, so they simply freeze. They sit in their comfort zone, read emails, scroll through Facebook, watch mindless TV, and accept less of themselves.

Let’s get back to numbers for a minute or two. It takes $79,900.00 to purchase a studio. That’s a lot less than most franchises. The good news is we’re not a franchise. I hate franchising. We put you in the video business and we teach you how to make money with video. You will totally own your own business. If you’re smart and apply yourself, you can make twice that amount of $79,900.00 in your first year. My studio as made over $70,000.00 in the first two months of this year. This business is booming. You need to take a serious look at it.

If you have the courage, make the time and journey to Indianapolis on Friday March 11th. You can audit some of the Advanced Training classes. Meet studio owners from Coast to Coast. Go out to dinner with them. Watch their work (their videos). On Saturday, March 12, you’ll be in my studio and in our training center attending the Show ‘N Tell Saturday Seminar. That’s a four hour free seminar all about starting your Home Video Studio. By the way, it’s a great way to bring your wife, husband, partner or significant other up to date on what you are interested in.

Want to do this as a retirement business? At Show ‘N Tell weekend you’ll meet plenty of folks who are in their 50s, 60s, and 70s running studios. For the right person this is the perfect business.

For a thousand generations the Jedi guarded the universe (Star Wars reference) and for 22 years we have been putting people into their own Home Video Studio. This business works and it can work for you.  Call us at 317-358-5932 to reserve your spot or simply ask questions.

Tony Miklos Celebrates Ten Years With Home Video Studio!

Tony Miklos
Tony Miklos had a great July at his Home Video Studio in Brecksville OH.  Not only did he post one of his personal best income months but he was recognized as a ten year studio owner at the 13th Annual Hanley Awards in Las Vegas.  Ten years is quite an achievement for any business - and it couldn't happen to a better guy!  Here's to Tony Miklos, our August Studio Owner of the Month.

Tony is beloved at Home Video Studio and is regarded as one of our seasoned owners who has seen a lot, knows what to do, and is eager to pass his experiences along to others.  Besides winning many Hanley awards for video excellence he has garnered multiple achievement awards on his journey including Studio Owner of the Year.

Like several of our owners Miklos came to Home Video Studio with a technical IT  background and a creative passion for video. But he also knew he wanted to make money. "I was looking for a franchise opportunity and came across Home Video Studio on the internet," says Tony, "and was immediately attracted because of the profit potential and the track record that I saw."  Tony was soon in Indianapolis at a Home Video Studio Show-N-Tell and shortly thereafter opened the first retail store-front for Home Video Studio in 2003.
Tony Accepting Studio Owner of the Year 2011
With the help of Home Video Studio's marketing plan and turnkey system he learned the ropes as an entrepreneur, mastering all aspects needed for a successful studio, especially the marketing and customer service areas. "What I found along the way is that I really like helping people and enriching their lives by doing what I do."

Even after all these years Tony is still especially fond of providing home movie transfer services for his customers.  "I live in an older, more established part of the city and I see a lot of film, both 8mm and 16mm, come in needing this old media migrated to a modern format.  It's satisfying to see people being able to enjoy their past heritage."  Miklos, like any self-respecting Clevelander, also enjoys sports and gets a kick out of producing sports scholarship videos for his community's athletic hopefuls.

As a veteran Home Video owner Tony has graciously provided us with ten tips (that's one per year) that he follows:
  • Be fluent at multitasking - "A busy studio should have at least four profit centers going at once."
  • You must advertise - "In my case Google Adwords is a necessity."
  • Follow the plan - "You became involved because you were attracted to a proven plan.  Don't get so "smart" that you begin to deviate from it."
  • Call different owners often - "There is such a wealth of support and knowledge from other owners.  This is a beautiful thing.  Take advantage of it."
  • Upgrade and Maintain your equipment - "Being current and being operable is your lifeblood.  Don't neglect it."
  • If customers bring in 8mm or MiniDV tapes ask if they still have the camera and offer a discount for it - "This helps eliminate the customers' clutter if they've upgraded, and it keeps you in backup equipment."
  • Have annual open houses - "We are a business in the 'neighborhood' and people enjoy spending time with their neighbors.  Also, serving fine wine to your neighbors doesn't hurt a thing!"
  • Marketing, signage, advertising..."Be (and stay) visible - "If people know you're there they will come."
  • Enjoy life - "This is a great business!  Enjoy it.  Take time off once in a while."
  • "Did I mention call different owners often?"

Arthur Bradshaw - July Studio Owner of the Month!

Arthur Bradshaw in his Home Video Studio

The Suffolk VA area is rich in history.  Between the American Revolution, The Civil War and even a trading post dating back to 1608 this area is a cradle of many events that shaped our country.  But Suffolk's richest culture lies with her people, and Arthur Bradshaw, one of her native sons, daily works in his Home Video Studio to ensure the preservation and memories of this heritage by providing 'Video Services for Everyone".  Meet Arthur Bradshaw, Home Video Studio owner from Suffolk VA and our July Studio Owner of the Month.
"This is the area I grew up in and love," says Arthur. "I knew that after college there was no place else I wanted to be. So I chose to return and make my life here. I have family here and a deep appreciation for all the wonderful people of this area."
Arthur attended high school in Suffolk, then attended Coker College, a liberal arts college in South Carolina as a biology major.  "People ask me if I majored in biology because I wanted to be a dentist like my dad," muses Bradshaw, "but really it was more like I had to pick a major and biology -  starting with a 'B' - was near the top of the list."   But Arthur did excel in his scientific classes, learning the importance of discipline, attention to detail and how systems worked together.  He even began master's classes in endocrinology.
But Bradshaw had a few other passions as well.  One was being creative and working with video. "I was always making slideshows for friends," says Arthur, "and my buddies and I made little movies, and I enjoyed the process of conceptualizing a story, shooting it, and especially editing."  He also met a pretty girl he wanted to spend the rest of his life with - and so he took a position with a leading multi-national distributor of industrial supplies, equipment, and other commercial items.
Arthur spent ten years in this position and learned many skills that would suit him later on.  He learned to be a self-starter and made "getting the job done" a way of life to personally meet the needs of his clients.  But he also knew that it was time to heed a voice inside him.  "I knew I had always pictured myself having my own business and it felt like time," says Bradshaw. "I was thankful for the skills I had developed but I still wanted to try doing something for myself in a creative field."
Arthur Bradshz
Plus, as he looked around at the corporate world he sensed a certain uneasiness.  Acquisitions.  Closings.  Layoffs.  "I know I am not immune to the things that life hands you," says Arthur, "but I at least want to handle things on my own terms."  So Bradshaw began looking at business opportunities.  It wasn't long before Arthur's wife, as wives often do, found the answer.

"One day Brenda saw an opportunity on the web for Home Video Studio ownership. I filled out some information, got a phone call, attended a webinar and before long I was on the road to owning my own video business."
In June of 2010 Arthur opened his studio on a part-time basis. Less than a year later he made a big decision and went full-time in April of 2011 - as he had planned and on his own terms. In a very short time Arthur has excelled at his new life.  He is frequently among the top income earners of Home Video Studio.  And creatively he has won Best Company Promo, Best Documentary, Best Studio Tag, and The Rising Star Award at the Hanley Awards, an international award ceremony for video excellence.
Was Home Video Studio a good decision for Arthur Bradshaw?  "This truly is like a family," says Arthur, "and, like a family, I can always count on support when I need it - from the home office to other owners in Home Video Studio."
All his life Arthur has been preparing for success in his business.  He has learned creativity, attention to detail, getting the job done, knowing his clientele, asking for support when he needs it, and giving support when others need it.  We have a feeling Arthur Bradshaw will be a success well into the future.

Home Video Studio Comes to Main Street!

In a world where, lately, we seem to hear plenty about Wall Street it's a pleasure to see that "Main Street" is alive and well in Apex, North Carolina.  There, from a charming location in the heart of Apex's historic downtown, Peter and Sharon Galluzzo own and operate Home Video Studio.  Daily they apply their firmly held beliefs in a vision, some hard work, faith and, yes, love to provide "Video Services for Everyone" in and around this Raleigh suburb.
Their journey, from first thoughts about starting a home-based business to their recent move from home into a retail store, is a well-documented story of strategic planning and daily diligence to doing the right thing at the right time.  This is the stuff of a successful Home Video Studio owner. This is why we proudly salute them as March's Studio Owners of the Month.
Peter and Sharon's success story begins, as many do, back in the days of their youth.  Peter had always had an interest in computer technology and, as a kid, wrote video game programs.  Naturally he gravitated to Computer Science in college.  This is where he met Sharon who, always outgoing and people-oriented, obtained her degree in English Literature.  Upon graduation from Hofstra University they soon married and started their life together in New York with Peter applying his computer skills in corporate America while Sharon commenced her career in public relations with its attendant duties of administration, fund raising and event planning.

The next dozen years produced a wonderful life for the Galluzzos:  two beautiful daughters, career advancement and an opportunity to move to the Raleigh NC area - a gorgeous part of the country and a technology hub.  But Peter is not one to stand pat, and  a couple of thoughts had been gnawing at him.  One was a little "entrepreneurial bug" that kept biting him and giving him an itch to leave the corporate world and build a business of his own. The other was a growing hunger to work with video, tweaked by his involvement with the AV team at his church. So Peter and Sharon  began to investigate the idea of making money with video - not always the easiest prospect.   Lo and behold they found Home Video Studio, a business opportunity that boasted many success stories and a proven plan.  Here was an opportunity to work from home, be close to their two daughters, work as a team and make money doing something they loved.
There's an old saying: "The will to win is not nearly as important as the will to prepare to win." No Home Video Studio owners exemplify this maxim quite like Peter and Sharon.  "When we first began to inquire about Home Video Studio and whether it might be a good fit for us we realized we needed to take some preliminary steps to ensure a successful venture," says Sharon.  "The first of these was to take care of some personal debt so we wouldn't have that pressure added to the cares of starting a business."
In the meantime they talked to several studio owners to get some wise counsel.  "We were sold on the idea of a franchise from the start," says Peter.  "The franchise would shorten our learning curve and that's what we liked initially.  We also liked the prospect of staying on the cutting edge with constant training opportunities - not to mention the tech support, the graphics department and a maintained website. The website has always been our number one front door and we've never had to do a lot to keep that door looking great."

"Plus when we spoke with other successful owners we saw some consistent qualities that we believed in and  wanted to emulate," says Sharon.  " We could see that the excellent studios were big on planning.  They were positive.  They were confident yet teachable."
So after their due diligence and at the right time (in their case after a couple of years) Peter and Sharon crossed the last of the preliminary preparations off their list, took a deep breath and opened their studio in their Apex NC home in June of 2008.

"Our original plan was for Peter to work his corporate job full-time until we got off the ground and established,"  says Sharon.  That would mean Peter devoting his evenings and Sharon devoting her days (in-between full-time mothering) to the studio.  "Then Peter would leave his full-time job, work the studio and I would get a job."  This "straddling" lasted a little over two years - then it became evident it was time to pull the trigger again.  Says Peter, "Our business was growing and we needed to make a decision.  After looking at our original plan we felt we needed to revise it.  We decided both of us working in the studio was the best way to yield the income we wanted and needed for our family."

This choice to work their studio full time was a risk, but aren't most major life decisions?  This is what they had wanted, and they began to make an immediate impact.  Soon the Galluzzo's name began to be mentioned regularly in the weekly top income list - and continues to be mentioned.  Soon many awards began adorning their shelves and walls - including the Quickstart Award, The Relationship Mindset Award, eleven (and counting) Hanley Awards for Video Excellence and  the most coveted Studio Owner of the Year in 2010.  Soon the Galluzzos became not just mentored, but mentors.  Sooner than planned Peter and Sharon saw the need to move out of their home and into a retail area.  "We really just make a plan and follow it," says Sharon describing their success." Sometimes it changes...sometimes things happen even quicker. Peter quit his full time job sooner than expected and we recently - again earlier than expected - moved into a store front."

Yet these successes are not a surprise to them - just a realization:  "If there's any 'success formula' someone can draw from," says Peter, "it's that from the beginning we were running a successful business in our minds. We have been in "excel" mode since day one. And it wasn't do or die, either. It was just 'do' "  Sharon adds, "Now we have another hurdle to jump.  We must hire employees in order to keep growing.  This is new territory for us, but it's a must!  The important thing is that we had a solid foundation and the experience of nearly five years to build on when we're making decisions."

The Galluzzos have learned a few things about being Home Video Studio owners.  Peter shares a few of his highlights:  "Number one, market your business consistently and daily. Number two, get referrals.  You need word of mouth business!  Number three, customer service.  Customers like the word "yes" and we try to say it often."
Sharon shares Peter's sentiment on the importance of customer service and relationships.  "We love that what we do touches the hearts and spirits of our customers.  They trust us with their most precious memories and we feel honored that they let us do that.

The Galluzzos are certainly on a success track rooted in the basics.  They continue to set goals and plan.  They regard their business as the working out of their faith, their integrity and their commitment to community.  And what kind of business building is in store for the Galluzzos in the future?   "That's easy," laughs Sharon, "I want to have multiple locations.  And one of them has to be at the beach!"

If that's their plan you can bet it's written down and acted upon a little bit every day...that's the Galluzzo way.
